Fic: Supernatural | Carving
Title: Carving
Fandom: Supernatural
Pairing/Characters: Dean/Castiel (implied), Sam
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 418
Summary: Missing scene from 5.18 "The Point of No Return" where Castiel carves the sigil into his chest.
“What are you going to do with that?” Dean asks, looking at the pocket-knife Castiel has pulled from his pocket.
Castiel looks nervous for a moment, before looking at Dean.
“I’m not, you are.” He says, swallowing.
Dean looks confused for a moment, as Cas hands him the blade before unbuttoning his shirt. He looks over at Sam, who has a grim look on his face.
He’s already figured it out and Dean has no idea what’s going on.
“Cas, what are you—”
“I can banish them, Dean. With a sigil. But they cannot see it before I use it, otherwise this will all be in vain.”
Then it clicks for Dean.
“Cas, no, that’s— What’ll happen to you?”
Cas shrugs, avoiding Dean’s eye.
“We don’t have a choice, Dean.”
And so with Cas’ back braced against the wall and Dean holding the knife, they begin.
Cas has a hand bunched into Sam’s shoulder and another around Dean’s waist, clinging to his back.
As Dean makes the first cut into the sensitive flesh of Cas’ chest, the angel whimpers, biting his lip. As the knife slices around in an arc, Cas pants, the air hissing through his teeth and his eyes squeezed shut in pain.
The fingers clenching into his shirt are painful, and Dean’s willing to bet Sam will have bruises on his shoulder tomorrow, but if Cas does this right, they’ll have lived to feel them.
Cas doesn’t seem to think any of them will.
As he finishes, and the angel slumps down the wall, his legs giving out, and Dean holds him under his shoulders, he feels a stab of shame and guilt, that he’s caused the one who believed in him as much as Sam or Bobby ever did to lose all faith in him. That he would rather go on a suicide mission than watch Dean’s inevitable failure.
As the wounds heal slightly and the bleeding stops, the boys button up Cas’ shirt, the ugly scars hidden by cheap cotton.
Cas looks at Dean for what Dean later realises the angel thought was his last time, and it’s like he’s taking this image with him, trying to burn the image of Dean Winchester into his mind, but then he looks away, disappointed, and Dean feels that stab of guilt again.
So later, as he smugly tells Zachariah he can shove his deal, Dean thinks that between his brother and Cas, it’s no wonder he couldn’t say “Yes” to those sons of bitches.
